Why Your Tummy Fat Could Be Killing You

Going for a flat tummy is no longer just in pursuit of physical beauty. Studies have been done and shown that having tummy fat is unhealthy! Not all body fat are created equal. In fact, there is a study conducted in MacMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario that has indicated that your risk of having a heart attack is dependent on where your fat is on your body as well as how much fat do you have. So is tummy fat dangerous?

UCLA’s Centre for Human Nutrition has reported that distribution of fat in your body is a more important predictor of heart attack risk than the traditional measurement of Body Mass Index (BMI). This is a major discovery. Thus your heart attack risk is tied closely to your overall body shape. Body shapes usually consists of either an apple, a pear or evenly shaped top and bottom. So who has a higher risk? Well, if you are having large thighs and hips ( think big bum ), you probably are less prone to a heart attack compared to someone having thin legs but a big belly.

This is what is known as the waist-to-hip ratio. This ratio is different for a man and a woman.

So how do you measure that?

It is pretty simple : get a measuring tape and measure your waist and your hip. Then just divide your waist by your hip. Eg, if your hips measurement is 40 inches and your waist is 34 inches, then use your calculator to divide 34 by 40 and you will get your hip-to-waist ratio to be 0.85. If you are a man, that’s great, if you are a woman, that’s OK (but you are right on the limit of healthy).

Simple Rule Of Thumb for Hip-to-Waist Ratio :
- A man’s ratio should not be over 0.90
- A woman’s ratio should not be over 0.85

That said, you need not worry too incessantly even if you have an apple shape so long as keep your belly fats in check. It is likely that you will stay an apple shape forever if you are born apple shape. Thus you have to accept the shape that you are born with. In a study led by Glasgow, Scotland, psychologist Dorothy Hefferman, Ph.D., researchers concluded that women whose actual body shape differs from their desired one may find losing weight frustrating and thus likely to fail in their weight loss program.

The idea is that you have got to keep the fats from accumulating at your middle and tummy area. Thus you should try to reduce belly fats instead of worrying about not having the ideal body shape.
